Coleman gave her first air show in the United States on September 3, 1922, in Garden City, New York. She became an instant celebrity and traveled across America encouraging other African Americans to fly. In 1995, the U.S. Postal Service designed a stamp honoring Coleman.

AIRMAIL

WORDS TO KNOW!

airmail: mail sent by air.

While aerial circuses were thrilling, there were everyday uses for airplanes too. On September 23, 1911, at the International Aviation Tournament in New York, people were invited to write postcards to go anywhere in the United States. They didn’t know that a pilot named Earle Ovington would be taking those letters on the first official airmail flight in the United States. With a bag of mail between his legs, Ovington flew to the town of Mineola, a few miles away, where the mail was put on a train.

WORDS TO KNOW!

contact flying: navigating by watching for landmarks.

beacon: a machine that sent out radio waves to help pilots navigate.
